Andrew Yang struggles to name his favorite Jay-Z song
Aspiring mayor Andrew Yang struggled to name his favorite Jay-Z song in an interview aired on Sunday – but didn’t hesitate when asked to name his top billionaires, singling out former mayor Mike Bloomberg.
In an interview on Showtime’s “Ziwe”, Yang said he listened to rap and hip-hop in the 1990s and 2000s, checking Jay-Z and Nas’s name.
When asked to name her favorite Jay-Z song, Yang paused for five seconds before wondering, “What’s my favorite Jay-Z song?” – then sang the chorus of his 2003 collaboration with Linkin Park, “Numb / Encore”, in a monotonous voice.
He seemed unable to name the song and said, “I think it was a duet, right?”
“Yep, there it is,” Yang said after host Ziwe Fumudoh told him it was rock band Linkin Park who featured in the song with the Brooklyn-born rapper.
“What? By the way, your favorite Jay-Z song is a rock song?” The host asked in disbelief.
“It was the first thing that came to my mind. I think about others I love, ”replied Yang, 46.
“And then there was the collaboration with Kanye, it was like ‘word in Paris’,” Yang said, avoiding saying the N-word in the title of the song from the 2011 hit.
“Yeah, ninjas in Paris, you could say ninja, ninjas in Paris,” replied Fumudoh.
“Ninjas, in Paris! Thanks for the help, Ziwe, “said Yang, thanking the host for” bailing out [him] outside.”
“He’s got such a cannon, you can’t really go wrong,” said Yang, who said he also liked to listen to “a bit of” Nas.
The publication of the full interview comes after a viral clip posted to Twitter on Saturday only showed the part of Yang who struggled to answer the host’s question when asked what he was “vibrating” at.
During the seven-minute interview, Fumudoh also asked Yang to name his four favorite billionaires. The former presidential candidate and entrepreneur Bloomberg said because the former mayor “had done a lot for the environment.”
“He made sure people didn’t smoke in New York City restaurants and bars, which at the time seemed like a revolution,” he said.
“People were like, ‘Can you do that?’”
Yang also listed Oprah Winfrey and Michael Jordan, as well as multimillionaires Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and LeBron James – who he says is “on the way” to become a billionaire.
Yang and Brooklyn Borough chairman Eric Adams is tied for first in the mayoral race, according to the latest poll.
