Batman Review # 108: Too Few Ghostbusters
There are many interesting elements to Batman # 108 with Ghost-Maker’s first month of these events. On the one hand, Batman comes face to face with his failures in protecting the citizens of the city he loves while laying the groundwork for Future State and its eventual downfall. On the flip side, Ghost-Maker is a villainous superhero whose Pepe Le Pew’s inexorable style of hunting opponents makes a refreshing change of pace.
The main story is, in many ways, an indictment of the Gotham as we know it. A group called the Unsanity Collective has erased the spirit of the Gothamites in the service of Robin Hood-themed theft. Batman doesn’t like it, but his Matches Malone character isn’t enough to fool any of them. He is obliged to accept a certain number of perspectives that he really can’t reply. It would be interesting if it led to something really different for him and not just Future state, complete with the foundation of the magistrate.
Forget it all: Ghost-Maker as a fearless adventurer with a devious KITT-like voice in his ear is a hoot. His enemies tell about one of his adventures, where he even shows an unexpected side to one of his opponents. Still, time is running out as he just shut down a criminal cabal as they come together to take him on. Ricardo Lopez Ortiz’s art is fun and very fluid as violence erupts from most of the panels, but he handles a silent conversation with great tension.
In short, Batman # 108 had elements of hope but was far too little Ghost-Maker and far too little self-awareness for Bruce Wayne. EVALUATION: HONORABLE MENTION.
