Bill Bailey says Eurovision pitch rejected for being ‘too dumb’
Bill Bailey has revealed that he previously made a submission to the Eurovision Song Contest, but was rejected for being ‘too dumb’.
The Strictly Come Dancing winner has pledged to represent the UK at Eurovision 2022 after James Newman disastrously received zero points with his entry song, Embers, last weekend.
However, this will not be Bill’s first attempt to fly the country’s flag as he revealed on Good Morning Britain: “ A few years ago I sent a submission to Eurovision and it was a sort of parody eco-anthem in the style of Daddy’s Army.
“And the BBC said ‘this is too stupid’, we can’t have that. And I just thought, well, taking it seriously, it’s not okay either.
Susanna Reid then advised, “ Dust off the eco-anthem and send it out because we’re a little bit desperate, aren’t we. ”
Sharing his review of Newman’s performance this year, Bill said, “ It was a usable song and performance, I just think we’re missing the trick a bit. We must celebrate the eccentricity of Britishness.
“It’s well done but it’s a bit disappointing, a bit bland. There is always something percolating [in my mind], a rock song, maybe have a giant badger.
“I do not know what it is. We don’t take it seriously enough and take it too seriously. We turned it wrong. We need to focus on performance, visuals and growing and celebrating britishness. ”
He then joked: ‘Some cow bells, there aren’t enough cow horns in them. ”
The comedian continued, “ There has to be a little more drama, a little more drama. That’s what this show is about, it’s a big party.
“Some are crazy. There is something that we really need to channel, even if it’s a little over the top, a little eccentric.
“It’s something that was missing.
After the embarrassing UK result, Bill stepped up to the challenge next year and tweeted: ‘I’d be happy to throw my hat in the ring for #Eurovision 2022.’
Eurovision 2021 was won by Italian group Maneskin, who scored 524 points.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6 a.m. on ITV.
