Fashion: 5 of the coolest jewelry trends to accompany you all summer
It’s been a sad year for jewelry, with a lot of our favorite pieces gathering dust. Now that the restrictions are slowly starting to loosen and we are once again considering wearing something other than sweatpants, the joy of jewelry is back.
Sparkling rings, chunky chains, funky bracelets – they are the easiest way to brighten up your mood, express your personality, and create an outfit.
Especially if you suffer from back-to-school anxiety (and who among us isn’t, to some extent?), Having a little fun with accessories is the perfect way to help calm your nerves and feel in control of something.
While fashion can still be broadly separated into ‘man’ and ‘woman’, the jewelry world is refreshingly becoming gender neutral. There is still a way to go, but big brands are launching more and more genderless collections – from the more affordable (like Missoma) to the high end (Bulgari).
That means jewelry can be for everyone – and here are the hottest summer trends to give your accessories game a boost …
If it’s good enough for Chanel, Simone Rocha, and Emilia Wickstead, it’s definitely good enough for us. This season the catwalks were obsessed with all things pearls – and now is the time to jump on the trend yourself, real or fake.
Billie Eilish – the undisputed voice of Gen Z – recently posted a selfie wearing a slim pearl choker. Her style tends to be more experimental and cutting edge, and it shows that pearls don’t have to be sultry. Vivienne Westwood has long been a champion of pearl punk, and for her spring / summer runway she modernized the look by going for a ‘more is more’ approach and layering necklaces with lots of pearls, chains and matching earrings.
If you’re not convinced pearls can work for any gender, take a look at style icon Harry Styles, who is often seen sporting a pearl necklace.
Remember the brightly colored plastic jewelry that everyone wore in the 90s and early 90s? Well, like almost everything else from that time, it’s back. This trend is all about having a little fun with your accessories – think candy colors and kitschy shapes, with lots of kawaii flowers and animals.
To give this look a 2021 upgrade, pair these elements with elegant accents of silver or gold – think shiny pearls strung on a delicate chain. It’s a way to revisit your childhood jewelry, while still looking sophisticated.
If trendy jewelry is your style, this season it’s all about the chunky cuff. It’s like the weave version of a bracelet: bigger, bolder, and a lot more eye-catching.
Either opt for sculptural and artistic pieces, or take the opportunity to enter another great fashion trend: logomania – as we see at Louis Vuitton. If you’re feeling particularly pissed off, grab a sheet from the SportMax book and wear your armband around your arm instead.
Personalized jewelry isn’t a new trend, but there’s a reason – and only one – it’s so popular right now: Beyonce. In April, the star posted a photo to Instagram wearing two necklaces with her name on it. After that, everyone tried to follow the trend.
There are plenty of ways to do it – either get tall and bold like Beyonce, with a thick plating with your name, or take a more minimalist approach and wear just one initial and minimal layer. You don’t even have to have your own name – take inspiration from the Duchess of Sussex, who wore a dainty necklace with the initial ‘A’ at Wimbledon in 2019, as a tribute to her son Archie.
A lot of these jewelry trends are big and bold – maybe we all want to catch up on the months when we haven’t touched our accessories.
So it’s no surprise that chunky chains are everywhere – big, bold necklaces and bracelets that resonate as you walk and almost feel like a workout to wear (in a fun way, we promise. ). Now is not the time to go for a shy, withdrawn fashion – grab a leaf from Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, and Victoria Beckham’s fashion books and layer as many big chains as you can, just for fun.
A chunky chain can elevate any look – so if you’re not quite ready to wear outfits that aren’t stretchy, place a shiny, eye-catching necklace on top and you’re ready for anything.
