Interview with Chloe Moriondo: independent mixtape 20
Chloe Moriondo has regularly released new music over the past few years, but now the 18-year-old songwriter is preparing to release her major label debut. Blood rabbit is a departure from the sound of Moriondo’s previous work, employing a full band to create alternative rock songs that sound absolutely huge (think: The Joy Formidable), combined with excellent songwriting.
To celebrate the new album, Moriondo sat down to talk to Hayley Williams, being able to fall asleep anywhere, and more in the latest Q&A Indie Mixtape 20.
What are the four words you would use to describe your music?
Teenager, honest, disgusting and fun !!! >: P
It is 2050 and the world is not over and people are still listening to your music. How would you like to be remembered?
I want my music to be remembered as fun pop and rock music that lesbians around the world loved.
What is your favorite city in the world to play?
Haven’t had enough experience, don’t really think about picking my favorite city, but my first and only two London headliners at Thousand Island were incredibly enthusiastic and so energetic and fun !! So I will say London for now or Detroit because it is so close to us !!!
Who is the person who inspired your work the most and why?
Probably Hayley Williams. I have been listening to his voice in Paramore since I got my first purple iPod Nano and headphones and I think it has been ringing in my ears ever since !! She’s so cool and inspiring and I’ve always loved the insane energy of rock chicks that she holds. I always wanted to pass this energy on to others someday.
Where did you eat the best meal of your life?
The best meal of my life was at this tiny little ramen restaurant with my best friend and now girlfriend Samantha and tour manager Ally (if you are reading this I miss you desperately !!). I believe it was in Boston and that was before I was a vegetarian so I know I couldn’t get the exact same, but Samantha let me take sips of the little bottled jasmine teas that they were selling and the ramen was divine.
Which album do you know every word on?
It’s slightly embarrassing, but I could confidently recite all the lyrics to any song thrown at me since. Pretty. Odd. by P! ATD. It was the first album that came to my mind because it’s so visceral for my college experience, but I could probably confidently recite each lyric even more confidently in No dogs allowed by Sidney Gish as well as.
What was the best concert you attended?
Probably the best concert I have ever attended was my first real little “show”, which I guess is different from a concert? It was an Alvvays show at the Magic Stick in Detroit. Jay Som also opened, I remember, and it was the first time I heard from them, which is crazy because I love them now. If we’re talking CONCERT best, I’d say BTS, which I spent way too much money on, but got close enough to make eye contact with Jimin, so I call it a win.
What is the best outfit to play and why?
I haven’t played in a while, but I would probably say a nice loose or cropped t-shirt and shorts or a skirt would be better. I’m really hot on stage and I like moving around a lot, so this will probably be my favorite outfit for the next shows! I want to look cool, so hope enough accessories + glitter + bright colors + stickers will make it cooler !!!
Who is your favorite person to follow on Twitter and / or Instagram?
He is not a person but he is better, Mr. Bubz on Instagram is my favorite boy to watch besides my own dog. Something about angry little dogs is so endearing to my weird little brain, I just wanna hug them and let them bite me !!
What is your most frequently played song in the touring van?
What was the last thing you searched for on Google?
“Open e guitar” I am too lazy to have a chord pedal !!!!
Which album makes the perfect gift?
Plantasia of Mother Earth by Mort Garson. I would give this album to all those who interested me and who maybe needed a nice music / vegetal atmosphere!
Where’s the strangest place you’ve ever crashed on tour?
I’m good enough that I can sleep anywhere, but so far I don’t think I’ve crashed into a place stranger than a green couch?!?!?! I’m sure the tour directors who had to carry me practically like a baby around theaters might have some good information for that matter, but I’m not thinking of anything!
What’s the story behind your first tattoo or favorite tattoo?
My very first tattoo was the tiny eyeball on my right middle finger, and it’s inspired by the eyes of a video game very close to my heart called Night in the Woods! I hung on to it myself at first, but it was kinda crappy, so my friend Robin (Cavetown) pushed him a lot nicer when I visited him to record my first EP, Spirit Orb: PI have more + my eyeball is definitely not my favorite but that’s all I’m going to say about them for now !!!
Which artists are preventing you from changing channels on the radio?
I don’t listen to the radio very often anymore, but if I’m in the car with my dad and Dua Lipa turns on, he doesn’t touch that tuner. I don’t know what’s going on with me, it’s just the groove of it all. You want me. I want you baby.
What’s the most beautiful thing anyone has ever done for you?
I have so many lovely people in my life who have done nice things for me so it’s hard to choose something especially with my bad memory and my fear of offending other people who have done great things for me. me …… I will say the moment is really cute fan in a lil pink outfit gave me a big BT21 Tata plush toy that I still show in my room. He is so cute and these things are expensive so I was really touched because he is my favorite and I couldn’t imagine anyone getting it for me !!
What advice would you go back in time to give to yourself at 18?
Uhhhhhhh I’m 18 now, so keep rockin and rollin ‘I guess !!!!! ????
What’s the last show you went to?
I think it was technically my own show, one of the Cavetown shows I was supporting in the UK before the lockdown in 2020! I miss it so much !!!!!
What movie can’t you resist watching when it’s on TV?
They are not often on TV, but if either Labyrinth or Charlie and the chocolate factory (Johnny Depp version) are on I’ll sit on the couch and vibrate. I fall asleep a lot during movies, so I might pass out, but I love them anyway.
What would you cook if Obama came to your house for dinner?
Oh shit, I can’t cook. I beg my dad to help me make a veggie lasagna, but if he wasn’t home I’d do my best to make some kind of soup I guess…. Everyone loves soup, right? Obama loves soup, right ???
