Nap Eyes – “When I Come Around” (Green Day Cover)
Nap Eyes, Halifax-based maker of deeply satisfying indie rock, has always been a fan of Green Day; Frontman Nigel Chapman said the punk stars of the 90s were his longtime favorite band. Today, Nap Eyes made that love official with the release of a cover of the Green Day 1994 classic “When I Come Around”, practically traditional folk for X-gens and older millennials around the world. On their version, Nap Eyes transforms “When I Come Around” into an internal indie rock song, with whispered vocals and a sad slide guitar. It fits!
This cover of “When I Come Around” announces a new EP by Nap Eyes, which will be released next week and also called When I come. Nap Eyes has been busy lately; last year they released the album Snapshot from a beginner, as well as some loosies. When I come is practically a loose collection in itself. In addition to the Green Day cover, there’s also a version of “Thank You” by Bonnie Raitt, a remix of “Even If I Can’t Read Your Mind” by hyper-pop duo Time XL, and a new song. titled “Following A Desire From God.
In the “When I Come Around” cover video, Nigel Chapman meets a Reddit commentator who says he should be more like Machine Gun Kelly, and he gives himself a pop-punk makeover in response. Margarita Brighton directed. Check out the Nap Eyes video below, as well as the original from Green Day.
Green Day has been my favorite band since I was 12, and “When I Come Around” has always been one of my favorites back home. The quality of the song speaks for itself; it’s one of the greatest songs ever written, in my opinion. I have worked under the influence and in the shadow of this song and other Green Day songs, periodically reconnecting with them and being overwhelmed by them, ever since I started writing my own songs there. has years. I hope everyone understands that getting to record this cover with Nap Eyes has been a long-held dream come true.
the When I come EP comes out 24/5 on Jagjaguwar.
