One-on-one with Jo Shimoda, rising star from Japan
Calm and unpretentious, Jo Shimoda, the first Japanese rider to win an SX race, spoke to NBC Sports to talk about his relationship status, what he would do if he didn’t race on motorcycles and which rider he admired when he was a child. .
The answer to this last question may be a bit surprising.
How did you meet your girlfriend?
How did I meet my girlfriend? Actually, I don’t have a girlfriend.
What’s your middle name?
My middle name? In fact, I don’t have a middle name either.
If you weren’t a motocross racer, what would you do?
I would probably play golf. My grandfather and dad love to play golf and they taught me so many times that I would probably golf.
What is your favorite movie?
I only watch YouTube, so I don’t really watch movies.
What is your favorite hobby ?
My favorite hobby would be golf. And I actually started surfing, and it’s pretty fun.
Other favorite types of races?
I like F1 a bit right now – just because I bought the simulator the other day and it’s kind of fun.
As you grew up, which rider did you want to look like?
Growing up, I always wanted to be like Justin Barcia because my riding style and my personality is a bit different from him. I never really do take-out or super, super aggressive piloting, so I always wanted to be like him.
Shimoda’s less aggressive styling works for him. In addition to winning his first Supercross race in the penultimate round of the 2021 season in Salt Lake City, Shimoda made his NBC Motocross Power rankings debut in fifth.
Shimoda’s ranking was based on his steady progress over the first two rounds of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross season. He finished 10th overall in the first race with a 14-11 in both races. His second run earned him fourth place with a 6-4.
By the way: Shimoda doesn’t watch movies, but he is looking for new musical recommendations.
