PSUSD teachers surprise students with a creative take on ‘The Heart of Rock & Roll’, giving a behind-the-scenes look at distance learning
On Wednesday, a group of music teachers from the Palms Springs Unified School District surprised their students with a special music video, giving their students a behind-the-scenes look at what really goes into distance learning from their perspective.
“The students didn’t know we were doing this project. They had turned songs and dances from other various projects, ”said Dana Zahler, elementary music teacher, Cahuilla and Della Lindley, PSUSD.
The video features the teachers singing their own rendition of the song “The Heart of Rock & Roll” by Huey Lewis and the News; they appropriated the renowned song “The Heart of Music” for the project. The video incorporated fragments of projects that the students had submitted most of the year.
“One of the ideas was… we can do that too. We can also sing and dance as we ask our students, ”Zahler added.
The pandemic has posed unprecedented challenges for every department. Music teachers say for them it was about adapting and encouraging students to cope with whatever they had at home. “We will find two pencils … they will become the chopsticks.” Get a small empty toilet paper roll … it’s your trumpet! Zahler explained.
At PSUSD, each elementary school student receives a music lesson once a week. Teachers say the weekly class is often a fun and creative outlet for children during these times.
“We teach each student 45 minutes a week,” said Tammy Hubler, elementary music teacher, Cabot Yerxa, PSUSD. Hubler added that the challenges they have faced together only make them stronger.
“Now that we’ve figured it out, all we’ve learned… when we come back to class we’ll be much better teachers,” said Alan Perrego, elementary music teacher, Agua Caliente, PSUSD.
“Music is really about community. You can create a community as long as you can see the people and as long as the people come together, ”Zahler said.
