The men and their music “
Highly Recommended ***** Thanks Drury Lane! I guess if you’re going to reopen your theater, why not ask a myriad of great singers and songwriters to do it! But, because we are just emerging from a pandemic, why not have one man to put all this music on stage? Great idea, Drury Lane! Who better than Ron Hawking to make this idea a reality!
Tonight Jane and I were fortunate to have seats at the Drury Lane Theater with a few hundred other people. Ron Hawking (who is a “local” boy) put on a hell of a show! For those of you who listen to my radio show, you know Frank and I are spending time with Ron talking about the weekend opening. I was sold based on my previous experiences watching this ma at The Appollo, The Mercury and even the Lucille (Cabaret) room at Drury Lane several years ago (pre-covid), but this show “Men and their music “, is a corner of paradise. Ron works with his group and brought the two young women who worked with him back to previous venues for nearly two hours of incredible entertainment.
Let me tell you about the few issues we had before I tell you about the incredible show. While they attempted to go through some type of Covid procedure, they were unable to comply. People were much closer than comfortable, so the movement was happening even before anyone with a ticket arrived. Some spectators were masked, others were not. Drury Lane is in Kane County, so since many of us were either Cook or Lake County, confusion everywhere.
Second, they offered drinks before the show but not during intermission and drinks were not allowed in the theater. Confusion, again.
Last but not least (in my opinion), people were filming the show on their phones and even their tablets! It’s hard for those around to see the show, but these selfish people didn’t care. When asked to shut it down, they simply moved to another area. This is housekeeping that DL will need to monitor for future events and plays.
Now on to the positive! What show! If you’ve been thinking about being entertained, you can still see the Sunday afternoon show (you’ll need to watch or listen to my web show at www.wcpt820.com) as it’s a 2pm performance.
“Ron Hawking: The Men and Their Music” is a wonderful show that pays homage to many favorite performers and great music. The show also shows the unleashed talent of Mr. Hawking who has not lost a step. His voice is still a powerful tool and it makes some of the greats of our time. Ray Charles, Bobby Darin, Frankie Valli, Johnny Mathis, a tribute to Bert Bachrach and his music ,, Kenny Rogers, Joe Cocker. He’s making an American bandstand and some of the hits that went into hits around that time, Lou Rawls, Roy Orbison, Wolfman Jack, Frankie Avalon and a wonderful tribute to Sergio Mendez.
Before the show closes, he walks into his old show, “His Way” to pay homage to Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., taking all of their characters and doing some great Vegas nightclub songs and paying a cute tribute to Johnny Carson with some very funny lines (well done Ron!).
Of course, even after the final song you know there will be more because they really leave us wanting more (but gave us a little more).
It was a very short run – something to reopen the theater and I’m grateful. Again, Sunday at 2 p.m. is the last show (but maybe they’ll bring that back). Maybe another theater will see this as a show to use to keep people coming back. It leaves us with a good feeling and the future is starting to improve (despite what we have read) but as a theater boss I urge everyone to get vaccinated. Not just for you, but for everyone you love and love!
